Databases for Finding Scholarly Journal Articles

  • MEDLINE Contains health and medical citations and abstracts on topics such as communication disorders, pathology, gene therapy, medical legislation and regulations, nursing practice and much more (1997-present). Citations only.
  • PubMed Provides access to scholarly journal articles about health and medicine, nursing, audiology, and biology, primarily from MEDLINE. PubMed also includes some citations for articles that have not yet been added to MEDLINE.
    Note: When searching PubMed, use all CAPS for AND & OR.
    Example: green tea AND (breast cancer OR lung cancer)
  • UpToDate(only available on campus) Use for background information on a specific form of cancer or a specific treatment for cancer. Will give statistics and valuable background information as well as
  • Biological and Medical SciencesCovers topics in science such as toxicology (pollution, pesticides, etc.) biotechnology, plant science, microbiology, AIDS and cancer research, and more.
  • Social Sciences Citation IndexCitations and abstracts of scholarly articles in the social and behavioral sciences, featuring Cited Reference Searching in 50 disciplines in the social sciences (1956-present).

  • Be very careful about using medical information that you find from the Internet. Make sure the website that you use is credible, up to date, and unbiased.
  • When looking for cancer statistics, try verifying your information in several places. Check the date to make sure you are using the most recent statistics that you can find.
  • Use PubMed and Medline to find Scholarly Journal Articles.
  • Use UptoDate to find background information and references to journal articles.
