There are many places to find information about Greek and Latin classics, mythology and interpretations of myth. This handout will help you find books, articles, and Internet resources; also consult the Classics subject page. For help on a specific topic or research question, please contact the Reference Desk (410-617-6802).

[edit] Articles
To find articles on a specific topic, author or book, use the DATABASES. You can access databases from anywhere you have Internet access through the LNDL homepage at http://www.loyola.edu. You must have a current library barcode to access databases from off campus. Your barcode is on your ID. (It's the number that begins with 22425. . . .)
If the full-text of the article is not in the database, try using Electronic Journals, or see if the print journal is available in the library catalog. If the Library does not own it, request the article through interlibrary loan.

[edit] Catalog Tips
To find books or videos on a specific topic, search the Library's catalog (SHARC). Go to the Library's homepage, and click on the link under Find Books and More.
If you are looking for a mythical person or creature, try doing a subject search (Zeus, Medea, minotaur, etc.) If that doesn't work, try it as a keyword search. Other subject searches you can use:

- Women Mythology
If you want an item from Columbia Union, Hood, Stevenson, or Mount St. Mary's, you can request the item be sent to Loyola/Notre Dame CIRC (it should take about 24 hours). Items not found in the catalog can be requested through interlibrary loan. Allow a few weeks for delivery.
[edit] Mythology in Literature/Film
- MLA Bibliography: The MLA database has articles on literature, folklore, and film. (Note: If you need more help using MLA Bibliography, you can click on the MLA Database Guide).
- ATLA Religion Database: Provides citations and some full-text of sources in world religions and topics related to religion
- Literature Resource Center: Contains biographical information, overviews of works, excerpts of criticism, and some full-text articles. Includes information about film directors and screenwriters.
- JSTOR: Represents a backfile of scholarly articles in the major journals of various academic fields, including English. (Note: JSTOR articles are also linked in MLA Bibliography, so start there first.)
- Project Muse: Full-text journals in literature, performing arts and other topics

- Grove Dictionary of Art Online: Consists of the full text of the Grove Dictionary of Art (1996), which covers the visual arts from prehistory until the 1990's, with additional new and updated material and links to images in museums and galleries.
- Artstor: Digital library of art images and descriptive information as well as the software tools to enable use of the collections. Initial content of 300,00 images covering art, architecture and archeology.

- Greek Mythology Link: Maintained by Carlos Parada, author of Genealogical Guide to Greek Mythology, and updated frequently. This is a large site full of maps, charts, biographies, signed articles, chronologies, and many other resources.
- Encyclopedia Mythica: A free online source covering mythology, folklore, and legends from around the world. Updated frequently.
- Classical Myth: The Ancient Sources: Images and texts about the Olympian gods. A bibliography and timeline are also provided.
- Diotima: A collection of materials for the study of women and gender in the ancient world.
- Tables of Contents of Journals of Interest to Classicists (TOCS-IN): TOCS-IN provides the tables of contents of a selection of Classics, Near Eastern Studies, and Religion journals, sometimes with a link to the abstract or text of the article.
- The Perseus Digital Library: Contains primary and secondary sources for the study of ancient Greece and Rome. Includes texts in English, Greek and Latin, and thousands of images.
- Bullfinch's Mythology - the Age of Fable: An electronic version of the first volume of Bulfinch's Mythology, "The Age of Fable or Stories of Gods and Heroes," by Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867), with hypertext links to other authoritative Web sites, such as the Perseus Digital Library and Encyclopedia Mythica.
- Voice of the Shuttle: Contains primary and secondary humanities sources, including art, classics, and literature.
